2009-2011 issues

So how many potential problems am I missing from my list of things that are known issues with the '09-'11's?

1. CCT... Can and should be fixed easy by dealer under warrenty. On 2010+ models, some say it was upgraded, some say no.

2. Death ray headlight lens'. some say Yamaha swapped out the lens' on the '10 models with frosted bottoms, some '10 owners say theirs didn't have frosted lens' and had to use the decals. Funniest issue I've ever heard of personally.

3. Noisy grabby clutch that Graves has a fix for. Some say the clutch is junk and some say there is nothing wrong with it and you just need to adjust the clutch lever. What's the deal with soaking the clutch plates in oil for 2 days? sounds like something a Duc would require every 7,500 miles. Is that a band aid fix the dealer does a couple times or so, to get you out of their hair until the warranty expires?

Not sure it it was the '09-'11 R1's or the '07 and '08's that had some sort of starter motor thing where something could break off in the starter motor and seize up the starter motor.

Of these, number 3 is the only one that concerns me the most.

I happen to enjoy causing those things to happen when riding through neighborhoods haha.

and yeah those 3 sum it up for the 09-11. But remember. EVERY bike and car has its issues. there's no such thing as a completely faultless vehicle

I have a 2010 and on the headlight, I have some fog (Frosted) bottom, I didn't understand the deal. Was the original all clear?

When I took mine in for an break in check up, they said they replaced the CCT piece. But I didn't notice anything from before.

Cold Start up takes forever, it won't fire. just cranks and cranks.

^ I dont know how many times I've watch that video.... Nice that I've been riding my Big Bad R1 around lately..... that crossplane motor.... its pure music.... nice, very nice.

5) is there is TSB fix for the heat roasting my thigh and nuts? I mean right now its been cold lately so no biggy but when summer comes i know my nuts would be on fire.

get rid of the CATs, should do the trick.. i've got LEO VINCE evoII carbon fiber cans w/ y-pipe... i have no idea what ppl are talking about heat issues :) :fact

I've had all three of those problems. The first two were fixed by the dealer under warranty. The 3rd I fixed with the Graves mod and soaking the friction plates in oil. 3000 mi later and the problem is still gone. My dealer acknowledged problem 3, but their solution was to just soak the plates in oil.

Another problem I've seen is the front fork cracking where where the axle goes through, even when tightened to recommended specs. I've also heard of thin paint but mine seems okay.

Yes! The fork issue, I knew I was forgetting one. Also heard about just as many reports of clipons breaking too. Both seemed to be a very rare thing to happen, like being hit by lightening.

So more or less could encounter one or more or none of the following.

1. Clutch
2. CCT
3. Ray gun lens
4. starter
5. forks
6. clip ons
7. thin paint,.. (seems to be mostly a subjective thing)

To be fair I should read of any reports of issues with the 2000 and '03's because I had both (new) and had nothing wrong with either.

Thanks guys.

Watched the video and 1 words comes in my mind: PURDY!

They are not jaw dropping like the 07-08's but still IMO 10 times nicer than a CBR, Gixxer or Kawi. Yes the '07-'08 BLUE is my fav looking R1 ever but I love them all.

I'm really curious what they will do to the bike for '12. The R1 is now on it's 3rd year model with no changes. They have never gone more than 2 years with the same exact bike.

I had an 87 turbo 300zx it was really rusty but every thing like the power seats and gauges all work got it for free from a friend. Finaly blew the clutch up racing a fox body mustang. It was beat on for ever till that happened

Took my 10 out for the first time today and road it around my apartment building. Only thing i i need to get used to is the clutch grabbed REALLY early and when in first gear the bike did not like just being engaged and rolling. When i got back on the throttle the bike started to buck like it was going to stall out. Would this be taken care of by soaking the plates? Or do i need to just adjust the clutch cable?

I have just over 10,000 miles on my 09-R1 and I did have the new CCT put in at 6,300 miles. I since then have had no problems. Meaning no noisey CCT chain rattel on start up and that is with out starting my bike for weeks at a time. I also did wrap the cat and muffler pipes with heat wrap when I put on the new HMF'S. No heat issues. No melting of the head light area's either. Just beautiful music and feel from the cross plane engine and exhaust sound like no other inline four on the planet. Now if only YAMAHA will make a new FZ1 with this engine in it????

Better than my last bike ('08 CBR1000rr) where a ton of them burned oil, and many of those a quart every 1k miles. tons of minor rebuilds only for the problem to come back again.

How about BMW with the S1000RR having to limit redline for the first 600 miles due to grenading motors?

How about Kawasaki having to recall ALL of their new ZX-10's due to engine issues (part suppliers)?

I could go on and on, RSV4 problems, subframes cracking on Suzukis, or the frame itself.

My point is that every mfr has something like this. If you read your list again, it's pretty damn minor in comparison. I'll take these problems over my engine burning oil any day, or having to take my bike back to the dealer to swap the engine completely.

the R1s are always one of the most reliable literbikes....from what I can tell....I'd rather have a noisy CCT than a grenading oil burner or a shitty paint job and a cracking frame....

everything has their little problems, and there are always lemons in the bunch, but Yamahas have actually made me somewhat brand loyal....like Suzuki once did years ago....

and i don't ride in flip flops with a half shell :fact :hammer: :hammer:

As much as I love Yamaha and my 2010 R1 it`s not so good...

1. Starts very bad when cold
2. After PCV installed starts and dies or dashboard goes off a second whenever she feels like..
3. I have 3000 km and the CCT started to hear a few seconds when starting her up...
4. Paint in extremly thin everything scratches her...
5. Clutch problem is there since i was born =))))))))))))))

What mine does exactly. It worries me when I try to start it around the 35 degree weather, after 4 or 5 cranks the battery gets weak. Loud bang...

Even after a tune up it still does this, so my solution is put a tender on over night, then the next morning I would give a slight twist on the throttle then hit the start button. It usually works.

About the paint - Its plastic, can't complain much there. Rocks and dirt flying at you while you go above 80 mph, it will put a mark on those plastic.

Clutch.... It makes weird noises when you pull the lever in and release.

If you have issues after PCV install then take it off. If you use the crappy crimp or twist connections then re connect and solder then heat shrink. I've seen a few bikes have trouble with pc and it was always shitty wiring.

I dont have any problems yet with my 09. I don't ride many miles though, abuse it at the track mostly.
