2012 Clutch Issues

Ok, so I've got almost 4000mi on this bike now. Lot of highway miles not to much racing. Changed oil at 600mi as required and now running Yamalube dino oil. For a while now I've had a very sensitive clutch. What I mean is it does not allow me to slip it very well. It gets very sticky. I can start a heavy launch and feather the clutch to keep rpm's where I want it, then all of a sudden it engages abruptly. Even taking off normal it will oscillate a bit until the clutch lever is all the way out. I'm getting ready for my 4K oil change and going with Mobile 4T. I'm hoping the change to synthetic will mellow it out a little bit. I never had any clutch issues on my 06 so I'm going to rule out operator error (for now). Any one experiencing a similar problem. :fork

What problem?

sounds like the 09 clutch problem.. all you need is the graves clutch kit..!!

trust us!! :fact

they omitted a couple of the clutch plates when they built the 09, the clutch is a carry over from the 07-08... Graves built a kit which comes with the needed plates & some fancy gytr race springs! we've all been through it!

I dropped the kit on my first 09. fixed it.. on my 2nd 09 R1 I installed it before I ever rode it.. buttah smooth!! perfect clutch!

you mentioned heavy launches.. some experienced increased problems specially after heavy launches...

biggest advice I can give you is make sure you soak the new plates for a good 24 hours prior to install.. I did not do this on the 1st
install.. I found it would slip on low rpms in city riding.. drove me nutts! ... my old man did not believe it either so he did not do this
on the install.. I took care of the 2nd install {1st bike got written off on an accident, not at fault}.. I have never had a single issue
with my new Cadmium 09... Its got over 8000 miles on it now.. still smooth & perfect... I specially love the GYTR race springs.. takes
a bit getting used to as its stiffer but its worth it!

Maybe you just need more practice?
read post above.. & thread.. practice dont fix it.. its a yamaha **** up.. at least Graves got on it quick
& got a great package deal for everyone direct from yamaha.. all parts required are Yamaha OEM parts..

no guessing.. it was taken care of very quickly! yamaha cant cover it under warranty cause it becomes
a wear & tear issue if not taken care of early... most riders dont ride their bikes either so no buddy caught
it early.. hahah.. at least thats what i think... a few peeps on here noticed it right away & posted up...

question comes up every single year now.. and twice during the winter months..!! :lol :fork

At least it does grab, and it sounds as if it grabs well. It could be a normal characteristic of the 2012. When it engages suddenly, does your motor bog down? If not, I would be happy that it's grabbing. If it does bog down a bit, you may want to slip it a bit more.

Brilliant! Did you fail your high school English? Are you even out of high school? Try reading the original post again (twice).

even if you get it covered under warranty, it will be the exact same clutch...
others have tried.. then purchased the graves kit anyhow...

I figured you wanted the full kit & kaboodle, :lol
youre lucky i'm not working right now.. slow typing but i've been there
so its good for new owners who dont know their way around here..

its all covered in the mechanical section...

So I changed my oil today to full synthetic Mobile One 4T in hopes to mellow the grip. There is also a noise coming from the clutch cover when I pull the clutch in in neutral. Now, I have heard this noise before but started paying attention to it today so it didn't just happen with the oil change. If any 09-12 owners can check this for me on their bikes I would appreciate it. It kinda has a metallic ball bearing sound to it that goes completely away when you release the clutch lever. Let me know. Thanks

Any 09-12 owners who can check this out?

For what it's worth!!! I have an 09 R1 (s/n 138) that just rolled over 21K miles, I use Mobil #1 10-40 full syn, and have had no clutch issues to date. Of course I have never abused the clutch either.....no start line launches or clutching to pull a wheelie. Still works perfectly! From my experiences of riding (and club races years ago) for over 30 years has been.....if you flaug it, your bound to replace it sooner than not! :fact

Well picked up the bike from Yamaha service department yesterday. And as everybody predicted they won't honor their product. That's pretty sad. Everything I griped about was considered to them to be "normal for this year bike". What a bunch of crap. Oh well you want something done right you gotta do it yourself. I even had the technician admit to the bike "lurching" on him when he starts off and that the cause is the clutch steels will get "hot spots" on them. Sounds like he came across this before? But hey... this is all normal right?

So next week I'll put the bike down for a week to do the 4000mi valve adjustment, open up the clutch and sand the steels and flip the fibers and I'm sending the ECU to FlashTune for an upgrade.

They had this bike for a week only to tell me everything's normal. I've been riding off and on for the last 30 years which means all the other machines I've owned over the years must have really had some messed up clutches.

Just following the manuals recommendation. Besides, I'm already hearing the notorious valve ticking coming from my motor. So yea, maybe there is some Ducati blood in there. Shoot, it almost sounds like one!

Now how about some information for those who are reading this and walk away with a sense of unsatisfaction. What is this Graves Clutch kit? Why does it fix it ?

The 09 to 12 R1 does not have a judder spring in its clutch pack. The graves kit (which is composed of oem yamaha parts) removes the last plate and puts a new one in with a judder spring and seat, these are the large round thin metal pieces the kit comes with. This gets ride of the nasty grabby effect that you can experience on the stock clutch at certain rpms/loads/rate of which you are letting the clutch out, riders weight etc.
My 08 CBR1000RR clutch did have a judder spring and seat oem.

I too have the kit installed on my 09 and its hands down the best mod I have done on this bike so far. Its completely out of my mind now, the abrupt groan and grab that the clutch would do, that I never managed to figure out how to avoid.

That definetely explains it in better detail. If my tinkering doesn't fix the problem then that kit will be on my list. I'm just a little confused as to why it only effects a small number of bikes? Not to mention when I'm sitting in neutral with the clutch in I can hear and feel from the seat of my pants a spinning metallic bearing noise coming from the clutch area. Is this normal for the 09-12 bikes?

i wouldnt bother tinkering or wondering why someone elses bike is fine- neither of these activities will fix your bike but if you check the parts listings you will find OEM yamaha clutch plates come in different thicknesses to fine tune the clutch pack thickness. i expect if you dicked around enough with different clutch plate thicknesses and rotational position to balance the pack you could eventually improve the issue.

if you have the clutch judder problem then fit the graves kit that installs the 07-08 clutch anti judder spring to fix the problem its that simple no screwing around or trial and error.

people who dont have the problem and i see a few in this thread will always be there mouthing off about how you dont know how to launch a bike or you have rooted the clutch ect.. they dont know what they are talking about ignore them.

graves wouldnt have bothered troubleshooting the problem if there wasnt a real problem affecting their race teams, and the money they make on the kit would be barely worth their time to sell them they are sharing their experience- if you want to correct your clutch and get on with riding rather than tooling then i suggest you make use of it.
