Hello,

Would it be possible to fit a 2009 cross plane engine in a '99 4XV R1 ?
Are there any existing example?

Thanks.

Not sure if people here are getting what you are asking here. I could be mistaken but don't think this Guy is looking to put cross plane guts in his existing motor. Pretty sure the easiest way to go about this would to be to just take a 09 motor and find a way to get it in the 98 frame. You might need to fabricate custom motor mounts but other than that just find a way to fit the thing in there.

from what this video and it's accompanying videos are showing... Sliding a cross plane into one of the older frames is not for anyone other than a professional motorcycle fabricator... If I gathered all the information correctly, A few years ago this guy somehow had Yamaha donate a brand new 2018 r1 to be completely disassembled and be retrofitted into the 1998 frame as some sort of a homage being shown to Yamaha and the OG R1 because this gentleman had such a crush on his original 1998 R1

It could be done, for sure. It won't be easy, and you're going to need to fabricate things, but it's not impossible by any means. My 2 fav R1's have been my 00/01s and my 2012s. I love the rear traction and drive of the crossplane setup, and I absolutely love the fit and feel of my original R1s. If I could have the 2012 guts in an older frame, hell yeah I'd do it! I love everything about the ergonomics of those old R1s.

If you really want to do it, there's no reason why you can't. You're going to need the wiring loom, ECU, forks (for traction control if you're going for one of those models), fuel pump, airbox etc from the planker, but you should be able to fabricate up some mounts which will work. Having owned several of both of those models, there is enough room in the older R1 to fit all of the 09-14 guts. I've literally had both of mine side by side, and the older R1 is quite a bit bigger.

The one really big issue I see, is aligning the sprocket from the motor of the 09-14 with the rear sprocket. From memory, the 2012 motor is slightly narrower than the 2000, and you'd end up with the Planker motor off-centre in the 90-01 frame. You'd need to somehow extend the output shaft and sprocket to align properly. BUT... what would be WORSE is if the 09-14 motor is WIDER than the 98-00... you'd end up with the motor off centre in the frame. Or, you'd have to modify the rear wheel and chain channel, which depending how far it went could end up having to cut into the 98-01 frame. It'd be a big job, but, not impossible.

Best to get another 99 engine. Takes some heavy modification to shoe horn something else in. 40-06 to 07-08 is the easiest swap as the engines share mounts. Kind of a mute point here though.

Can you put an 09-14 engine in a 99? Well, technically yes, but the guys that did it were a team of professionals, they did it as a labor of love and it took them about a year.

If you want the look of the 1998-02 but the big bang engine, then simple use the 2009 or late engine and frame, old rear subframe and old paneling it would be a lot easier to do, I'm right converting my old 1999 R6 with new look, only need to build rear subframe from a 1999 alloy subframe, cut and weld on other words. Lol,
Also think looking right now a purchase of a 2002 R1 with new look to, only problem with this is I live the sound of the big bang engine so mite pop an engine in to lol so if I do I'll post in the fuse.
