I had a friend buy one on ebay last year and he had to make adjustments for the latch to catch it.

If that doesn't work, go to wish.com. I purchased one for a 2013 R1 for $19.00. They accidently shipped me two for the price of one and they both fit perfectly.

1) Attach black plastic hook to seat cowl with bolt and nut (these were supplied with the one I received).

2) Attach metal bracket to the passenger seat locking bar (silver bar the front of the passenger seat attaches too). Requires two bolts that were not supplied. I used the bolts from the exhaust heat shields that I removed since I installed a belly pan.

3) Slip the seat cowl on, making sure black plastic hook latches correctly first. Then, lift up the black rubber pad out of the way (be careful not to move it out of the way too much, otherwise it may detach from the cowl), and secure the seat cowl to the bracket. You're supposed to use bolts (same size as the ones needed to mount the bracket to the bike), but I used zip ties. Much easier to put on, and much easier to take off if I ever get pulled over. (I keep a spare set of zip ties with the registration). I actually like the way they did this, as it's not as easy to use zip ties with the OEM cowl I believe.

See pictures, everything's color-coded:

I bought one to match my ebay plastics and it worked flawlessly. Was purchased from a different seller too, than the one I got the plastics from. $25 shipped or something? I had an OEM one, and the chinese copy looked identical, prior to me selling the OEM one for like $120. IMO, no brainer. When I dropped the bike in the rain and it messed up most of the stuff on the right side, I was able to sell the stuff on the left side, buy the chinese plastics, and still be ahead about $200.

The oem materials are far superior to the Chinese one. The plastic is better the paint is better and matches perfectly and the rubber cushion is better. Is it worth the $$$ ? No!!! But I wouldn't put the cheap one on my bike !!!

I don't think they're supposed to be easily removable; after all, the space beneath there is a joke and mainly occupied by the Exup servomotor. Looks only.

Odds are that's why the R1 has a "documents holder" beneath the right hand upper fairing panel but hey, guess what? It takes an allen wrench to access that. :shake

"Do you have an appropriately-sized allen wrench officer, I need it to remove some plastic. Then I can show you the paperwork." :D

Just thought i'd add to this. Ordered an Ebay/Chinese rear cowl in Black. My R1S is Red/Black/White so it would seem to be the OEM pick. Took all of 10 minutes to install. No exaggeration. I happened to have the 4 bolts on hand though, saving me a trip to fastenal or Ace or whatever.
The fit is EXACTLY like oem. The paint is very nice. Matches bike flawlessly. I assume that the chinabay copies have only gotten better since this thread, and i'm here to vouch for them: they are exact replicas of the OEM cowl now days. Perfect fit. Takes no time at all.

PS: I'd like to thank Treyzian for the pics/tutorial. These things come with zero instructions and, to be honest, you'd have to be pretty dense to not assemble it correctly-but it is ALWAYS a welcome treat when someone provides such info. Thank you very much
