Cam chain replacement

I have an 2004 with 21,000 Miles and have started to hear slight cam chain noise. after doing some research I’ve noticed that it’s a simple replacement as far as the tensioner goes but the chain requires more removal of stuff I’m not yet comfortable doing, my question is when should the chain be replaced? Is this a mileage replacement or something I’ll need to visibly look at to tell. The noise is very slight of that makes any difference and doesn’t really sound like the chain is too loose but I’ve had a couple shops listen to it and both think it’s the chain making the noise. I’m going to be using an OEM part from the dealer for the tensioner and was just curious if I should plan on doing the chain or if I can save time and get by with just tensioner.

Could also be worn cam chain guides.

Cam chains are generally good for nearly the life of the engine. CCT's do tend to go before the chain...a popular mod is to replace the stock tensioner with an aftermarket manually-adjusted unit, which is less likely to back out at high rpm's. But you'll need to keep an eye on mileage intervals between adjustments, and it doesn't take much to adjust one...often less than 1/8th of a turn on the bolt/screw (depending on model) is sufficient.

If anything, unless something is drastically wrong 21,000 miles is too soon to worry about excess camchain noise.

It's a multilink chain and will outlast the bike. It won't need changing.

The chain on my '99 had become noisy, but fitting a manual CCT quietened it down nicely. I haven't adjusted it since fitting in July last year, but it could probably do with checking.

You could just fit another OE tensioner, and it would probably be OK for another 20,000 miles.

I have 60 k on mine with no issues. As parts wear slightly ( normal) there may be a little noise and then one day its gone as the tensioner self adjusted. This is providing everything else is ok. I personally stay away from after market tensioner that do no self adjust. You can cause wear by not keeping up on the adjustment and or making them too tight. Stock works just fine.

at 60k miles there is stretching which as already taken place.. just because you can continue to adjust a manual cct for
timing, does not mean its doing just fine. Its easy to say, well its running good n' purrs like a kitten. :no

I just did some headwork on my 09 R1 at 60k kms (not miles like above) and they recommended changing the cam chain,
guides as well :fact

I had already planned on this as my old man (mechanic) and I had already discussed it, but i'm installing brand new GRAVES camshafts as well.

op, if you're not comfortable with steps shown on the service manual, just take it to a professional.

I do think its early to required such work at 21k miles though, get a manual cam chain tensioner :dunno

we're going to do mine, but then I've got the engine out, top and bottom ends split apart. We are replacing
the crankshaft sprocket as well. Parts are all very cheap but the work has to be done right including timing set.

i have never seen one wear out that soon. i would take the 20 minutes to replace the tensioner and if the noise is there after you can replace the chain, but i doubt you will need to, or the guides at that mileage
