Clip ons...What are you running and how do you like them?

Like the title states please post up your opinions about the clip ons you chose. Also, I'm of the short stature  so you 5'3"-5'5" riders out there, did you choose a clip on that moves the handle forward of the fork tube or did you choose a clipon that is like stock setup, where the handle is at the fork tube.
Risers, anyone try to use 1" or 1.5 " risers?

Thanks for all opinions:nerd:

Welp you asked. My 2 cents.

I use OEM because I don't race and or use slicks. All the beefy aftermarket clips just hurt after a few hours of riding, but also if something is stiff beyond your needs/ability it takes feel away ultimately. Like anything you're attached to, "feel" is a result of things flexing a bit to give you feedback, tires, frame, forks and to a lesser extent the clips ons all flex and that all combines in the form of feedback. I had woodcraft on my R6 and put the OEM back on after a few months.

People just automatically think stiffer is better and mind you the thinking was even at the top levels of the sport in the late 90s to early 00s. In GP racing the bikes were getting so incredibly stiff because that's what the engineers thought would make for a more consistent chassis. The riders however (and we are talking the worlds very best) complained that the feel was gone and they had trouble telling where the limit was. In a sense the rider is a strain gauge and he needs things to move a little bit in order to get a feel of what the bike is doing.

Thanks for this info. Main reasons for needing clipons for me are.. Adjustablilty, better positioning and more room for add ons and such, Just like how adjustable rearsets help with foot/leg positioning. I'm a feel type of rider myself and coming from years of riding a gsxr1000 and switching to the R1, there is a Big difference all around. I don't feel quite at home yet with the R1. Seems like the R1 is more suited for Taller riders and the gsxr for shorter riders.

I went the Evot Tech route but have yet to install them

I`m trying a set of extreme components clip ons this weekend. They seem to provide the same reach as oem but you can obviously tailor the angle.

I come from APEX GP where reach is a bit closer which was great for me as I`m not that tall and feel was excellent but I really got tired of them getting loose. Their design hides the bolt that tightens the bars in place and it was always getting a tiny bit loose. It probalby wouldn`t bother some but for me it was annoying.
I'm so tempted to get me some APEX GP ones and was thinking maybe using blue or red loctite maybe?? Do you think that would help??

sounds like they used too big of a drill bit. when I drill and tap stuff at work I stay at or above the 75% depth of thread method. it produces a much tighter fit and the bolt stays tight without thread lock most of the time. the drawback is people may complain the bolt wont thread by hand easy.

I had a few aftermarket parts with very loose fitting fasteners that loctite never would hold. basically they drilled the hole too big and the teeth of the bolt and hole don't engage enough. think of it like 2 gears meshed together. if it's not together far enough it will have slop and is a lot easier to strip.

you could possibly fix this issue by deforming the threads of the bolt. however it may also gall up the threads in the hole. to me they're already junk so no big deal. you can also switch out to different thread pitch bolt or tap the hole for a larger bolt. but it's hard to find cap head allen bolts that are zink coated so they don't rust.

I had stock (obviously) went to Apex GP which were comfortable as the bar is on the center line of the fork tube. There were some challenges with cable routing but it worked out. I had to add spaces to the steering stops to limit turn radius so to get the best angle without touching the tank.

I am 5-11 and found that the Apex were good for the street I could not get in the correct position on the track so I went to the Evol Techs which I am really happy with. They are tangent with the front edge of the fork.

I really was interested in the Renthal Gen 2 which looks the same as the Evol Tech but I could not find them in stock anywhere at the time.

BTW- I have been using Apex bars on my 675 for years and only had it come loose once because I did not use Loctite. After that I used loctite and held the clamp in a vice while tightening the screw with a ratchet Hex.

Hi BFrank,

Trying to decide whether to replace my stock Clip ons to the Renthal Gen 2 which may have similar positioning as the Apex Bars. Reason for my clip on change: I would like the bars to be slighlty longer than stock giving me more leverage when steering the bike...as I find my 2016 R1 bars quite narrow.

I guess your post states you had some minor issues with cable routing but problem was not really an issue...

Are your Clip ons slightly wider than stock? You see my previous bike was a 2012 1199 Panigale and the Pani's stock bars are wider. When I purchased this R1, aside from the track biased riding position, the bars are much narrower than the Panigale's. I seem to like the wider bar set up.

Any of you using a wider bar set up here...any pros and cons?

Thanks in advance!

Miguel

OEM ones are fine.

But to install Brembo race MC I had to go aftermarket for extra space. I went with Evol, had to get a new MC line. But after all it was worth it. Brakes are day and night different.

Evols are easy to adjust, nice thing about them is that they stick out of the fork sides instead of the front like traditional clipons, so more leverage.

I went aftermarket as I am racing and double header weekends if you crash you need to easily replace the bar. I got sponsored by Driven Racing so I use those. They do shift forward more than stock (more agressive) and I put them a little more straight for a wider stance and easier to push and pull to get the thing to turn faster.

I had a big problem with them moving on me while on the track. Multiple weekends. Was so frustrated in middle of a race and one bar end came in like 3"! Finally called Driven and talked to them about it and I just didnt have them installed right. The clamps have to be exactly equal on each side otherwise they will walk. Even with Blue loctite. Once I re-installed them with the focus of getting the clamp equal on both sides they have been amazing. I am 5'9" and they really give flexibilty of riding position and comfort. Also got a throttle from Driven too. Super happy with all Driven products!

Okay so I installed renthal clip ons and they are off a little. The clutch side is higher than stock and the are not as angled down like the stock ones. Will that mess with the geometry at all ? I should not have any issues when I’m riding track leaned over with the pushing and counter steering abilities correct?
