Fuel pump relay problems?

I've finally got my bike back together with the new bodywork, fuel tank, and so forth. We filled up the tank, primed the carbs with some carb cleaner, and fired it up. It cranked and cranked and fired for a few seconds, probably burning the carb cleaner we put in. This led us to believe it was a fuel problem.

We checked all the fuel lines and the fuel filter and they all flowed just fine. Then we took the pump off and ran it using a battery and it worked just fine. After spending a few hours looking over the forums, I believe it's the fuel pump relay that's the problem.

We replaced the wiring harness during the rebuild and were using the relay from the newer harness. I replaced it with the old relay and had no better luck. I still can't think of anything else it could be besides the relay, but it seems odd that two different ones would be bad, especially one that worked before we removed the wiring harness.

I'm totally stumped at this point. If it isn't unusual for two out of two relays to be bad then I guess i ought to order a new one. If that is unusual I might take it to the local Yamaha dealer and get a diagnostic run.

If I order a new relay from off here, I want to be 100% positive it works. Otherwise I'm just wasting money. If anyone has one that fits that bill or knows a bit about these relays, I'd love some help.

wiring harness/fuel issue

Hey I'm having sort of the same problem. A couple of weeks ago, my headlights and the lights behind my instrument panel went out as well. After reading a couple of threads, I realized this was a common problem with the wiring harness burning out. Since then, I have replaced the wiring harness and all my lights are coming on, but now when I start the bike, it shuts off immediately after I release the start switch.

I can hear the fuel pump switch on when I turn on the ignition and the engine kill switch. Also, it will stay on as long as I hold down the start switch, but as we all know, you can't ride a bike like that...

I'm pretty sure it's fuel pump issue as well, but I'm not entirely sure, because the bike is getting combustion, but it's dying like there's no fuel being supplied to it.

I'm kind of a newb to the forum thing. Does anyone have a wiring diagram so that I can see exactly all the electrical components that have to do with the fuel?

What year is your bike?

Fuel Problem... or not?

'01 R1 Euro cranks and cranks (strong. and i hooked it up to a running bike to jump just in case the battery was under-powered) but doesn't fire. The bike was sitting for a week or two... before that, it started without any problems. Similar problems to the posts above, but no one posted any fixes...

-When I apply power directly to the pump from the battery it spits out gas just fine (took off the hose connected to the carbs). I can't hear the fuel pump turn on/prime when I turn the key to "on", but I put a power tester to the fuel pump power connector when I turned it "on" and the light came on, then went off after a few seconds like a priming voltage should.

So power is getting to the switch, fuel is coming out the pump, but bike won't start. I drained the carbs and let it sit for a while in case the carbs were flooded, but it didn't work.

I also took the air cleaner off the carbs and put cleaner in there to see if it would fire up for a second just on that, but the bike wouldn't even take that... or else I might think about taking the jets out and cleaning those...

If the relay was bad, would I be able to see the test-light come on when I put it to the fuel pump power connector?

sorry for the long post, just trying to be throrough. Bike is in neutral, everything comes on like normal, just doesn't fire up.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me look somewhere I haven't.

More than likely, your pilot jets are plugged from sitting. Here's a procedure for cleaning them:

Pull the tank, remove your choke cable, drain your float bowls, loosen the screws on the carb boots, remove entire carb bank and flip it upside down. Pull float bowls, remove your pilot and main jets and clean them with carb cleaner. I'd also squirt a bit of carb cleaner into the fuel inlet ports and also clean the little rubber stoppers. No reason to pull the throttle cables and make sure you put an old rag over the intake ports so you don't lose any screws in unwanted places. After cleaning your pilot jets, it's a good idea to blow compressed air through them to make sure they're open.

Before you clean the jets, while you have the tank off, pull a spark plug and ground it to the engine. Crank the bike and check for a spark. This will tell you if it's fuel or electrical.
