Shudder in first gear

I need some help. I have a 08 R1 with 1500 miles on it. There are times when I'm in first gear and when I accelerate, I get a shuddering vibration/noise. It's similar to if you were to riding 30 mph and opened the throttle up while in 6th gear. It worries me a bit. I hope it's not hurting my bike. Any input?:dunno

Probably need more detail here to attempt to try and diagnose...

You say you get a vibe (sometimes) during acceleration in first gear...

Happens only at a certain speed? From a stop? Did you replace any parts recently such as sprockets, chain, Fuel Computer (PC or Bazzaz)...

No parts have been replaced. I usually notice it when starting from a stop. It literally feels and sounds like when you try to accelerate from a low speed while in 5th or 6th gear. My bike has 1600 miles on it and it's not even a month old.

I'll bite - I think its the clutch, the same rattle/vibration that everyone gets with an r1, only the 07/08 seems like it can get worse when the plates start sticking together. It's probably there in the other gears, you just can't hear it from wind noise or whatever. If you take it to the shop they will prob tell you they can't hear it and its fine and don't worry about it. Even if they open up the clutch cover they won't see anything wrong :rant My advice is disassemble and reassemble the clutch yourself and see if it makes a difference. Just take it all apart and reassemble. Worked for me and takes about 2hrs doing it yourself, and it's dead easy. But don't tell the shop or you might cause hassles with warranty. G'luck and keep us posted.

When you had the problem could you feel a wierd vibration? My buddy told me the correct term is "lugging" if I remember correctly. My mechanical skills are basic at best. The most I've done to anything is fender eliminators, full exhaust installation, and I've installed a power commander. So I'm hesitant to take my clutch apart.

One other thing that has been eating at me is that I have not taken it in for service. At 600 miles I changed the oil and filter but I have been so damn addicted to my bike that I haven't brought it in. I've read quite a bit on the 600 mile service and a lot of people seem to think that it's enough. I hope I'm not risking anything by not taking it in.:dunno

have you checked your chain tension ?
if it is too tight or too slack it may cause your slipper clutch to not work like it should.

i used full synthetic from 1000kms and all good.
could it be the cam chain/tentioner or whatever, they can make a racket at certain speeds, maybe not but same kinda sound as low speed in a high gear.

yeah the vibration feels like a tractor taking off, esp on a slight incline. Sorry bro no straightforward answers, just eliminate as best you can, one by one. Check the suggestions above, incl. chain tension as I thought the slipper clutch is related to this issue - occasionally when it was doing this funny business the clutch lever freeplay would increase as if the slipper was engaging for no reason. Can't discount oil either as that would be related to sticking clutch parts, mine's motul 7100 now and cool as a cucumber. You gotta dump the oil to check the clutch anyways, and reassembly is easy peesy and will at the least eliminate a variable and at best solve it. keep us posted on what you do.

From what he's describing I think he's lugging the motor more than running into chain/clutch problems.

Have you installed a PCIII or adjusted the TPS on the bike?

The first thing I would do is check the TPS value in diagnostics mode and see if it's way off.

I have not installed a PCIII my bock is still stock. Checking the TPS value is far beyonnd my mechanical skills. I supposed I'll just have to take it in. I just hate being without my bike when the weather is so beautiful. :cryin

Hmm, could be worth a look also. Still, my bike sounded the exact same as you are describing, lugging and sounding like a tractor on the takeoff, particularly gradual inclines or on a partially cracked throttle, a total shudder as you described. Have a look at the tps values as that should be dead quick to look up in diagnostic mode, check the service manual or forums on here for that if you haven't already. & if that's not it have a look at the clutch, even if that's not the problem, you've just eliminated a few variables. You can do it!

I'm getting this problem on my 01. It vibrates at half clutch, taking off from stop. The rattling sound from the bottom is also very noticeable. Was bidding for an entire clutch assembly from Ebay, but got outbidded! Daiiimmnn..

Also try idling along in first gear, with clutch completely out, then accerate at different throttle settings and see if you feel the same thing. Try several times.

Hey R1Slapper, sorry if I hijacked this thread. Did what you said about idling in first gear. Wow! How super un-smooth was that! Bike was moving with a jerking motion.

Pretty messed up.
