These questions are directed to those who have had their bikes stolen. I am interested to hear what the thieves taught you.

Give a basic rundown of how it got stolen with as much details as you know.
Where was your bike when it was stolen?
Was it visible from the street?
Was it kept in that spot regularly?
Did you have an alarm?
Did you have GPS, did it help?
Did any actions you take afterwards help the law find the bike/thieves?
What would you have done differently now?

I only have liability and I am super paranoid. I don't even want to ride it out for dinner.

Thanks to all for their time in responding.

Where was your bike when it was stolen? apt parking lot
Was it visible from the street? not really. surrounded by cars
Was it kept in that spot regularly? yup..unless it was raining or hailing
Did you have an alarm? nope
Did you have GPS, did it help? nope
Did any actions you take afterwards help the law find the bike/thieves? posted flyers around the apt. neighbor seen it and immediately pulled him gxsr into his 1st floor apt
What would you have done differently now? I would have gone out for that ride I wanted to go on that night instead of crashing out at midnight (bike was taken between 2 and 6am)

lesson learned...first sportbike. had cruisers in the complex for years with no problems. I have a garage now with GPS and a loaded pistol and shotgun ready for anyone trying to break into my garage....and I live in texas...where its recommended to shoot to kill :lol

some tips. if you have a minty bike and live in an apartment dont leave it in the general lot. if you must, atleast put a kryptonite bike lock on so not the whole thing gets stolen just the parts. parts like scotts steering damper or even freakin rearsets and brake lines. best thing is find a friend with a garage. if you own a home and use the backyard shed make sure you have a dog close to the shed. personal or storage garage's are the best bet. my .02 good luck

Give a basic rundown of how it got stolen with as much details as you know:
Enclosed motorcycle trailer in my driveway was stolen, around 4am somebody must have pulled up broken through hitch lock and towed it away.

Where was your bike when it was stolen?
Inside the locked trailer.

Was it visible from the street?
Yes.

Was it kept in that spot regularly?
Yes.

Did you have an alarm?
No

Did you have GPS, did it help?
No.

Did any actions you take afterwards help the law find the bike/thieves?
Reported stolen, police didn't even send someone out, they completely don't care about stolen bikes. I spent my time working insurance.

What would you have done differently now?
Better locks on trailer, including a wheel boot, and surveillance cameras at my home. A lso I'd have a rider on my homeowners insurance policy to cover stolen bikes. Lesson learned: motor vehicles are not covered by homeowners even if they are in the garage at the time they are stolen.

if your selling a bike never meet the buyer at the same place your keeping the bike and always have the cash in your hand before you let someone else ride the bike.

one time I was selling my Trans Am. the buyer came to my house the first time to check out the car. when he found out it was kept in a garage and I wouldn't let him take it for a test drive he said he'd come back with the money. the next time he came back again he wanted to take it for a test drive. I told Him to put the full payment in my hand and then he could take the car for a drive, if he didn't like it I'd give him his money back....when I didn't back down he left. I called some local cops I knew and they told me the guy had hit several people by stealing their cars when he test drove them.

another time I was keeping my bike in a storage unit while I lived in a apartment. one day I went to the storage unit to find the locks had been cut off the door. my bike was still inside because it had a motion sensor alarm with a pager and had 2 kryptonite chains and locks on it. one around the swing arm one around the frame. both secured to a post encored into the cement floor that I drilled out and refilled with rebar and new cement (the manager wasn't to happy about that).
