FTECU flash vs. SBU flash

I'm getting my bike back on Tuesday and it's down to the wire. I have to choose whom I want to flash my ECU.

SBU has this dyno comparison:

...But I was unable to find any dyno schematics on the FTECU website.

Does anyone have any dyno schematics so that a direct comparison can be made? SBU dropped their price atm, so there's no cost difference between the two. Really would like to get the better of the two if we can figure out on paper which one that is.

For certain bikes SBU uses F-T. However they develop their own image. The image is what makes the difference, not what/who flashes it, as long as you have that image.

Tad, there's going to be some differences between the two. Especially when you see Spiderman post things like:

There's an updated Full System map on the database for flash tune... A few hundred more hours on the dyno with our shop bikes... ENJOY!
So, if the FTECU one is improved, is it now better than the SBU one?

Weird that we don't have any dyno #'s on the FTECU to compare with the SBU. We only have someone saying that they've improved it from their last version.

Really would like to be able to compare them before I pull the trigger...

The image is what makes the difference, not what/who flashes it, as long as you have that image.
I think that is exactly what I said.....how the image is developed is what matters.....

No...I dropped in to clarify that FT is the hardware to do the flash....developing the image to get the bike to preform the way you want is where the hard work is....example, what I built into my image for the 09-14 R1....

Shit! Makes sense now. Thanks for the heads up!

The topic on the Graves flash is FTECU, so that's where the confusion came in.

But I still have yet to see anything on a dyno from them. Just that they improved it.

If they can't pony up something on paper, I'll be sending my ECU to SBU tomorrow....

That is a question for Graves....Graves is the one that developed that image that is available on the map share.

I would also state that is is not just about RWHP....developing an image has a lot to do with usability of the power. How the image deals with on-off throttle transition, reduction of engine breaking, and other qualities needs to be on folk's list when making that evaluation. Those are not necessarily things that you can tune or show on a dyno...

I am not endorsing one over the other, just giving some food for thought....

I will be in the same position next week, trying to choose and from what I can tell so far:

It seems that $200 at SBU gets you a map and the custom parameters (EUXP, AIS etc). turned on or off as your want them plus the expirence of an entire season of racing on all their bikes last year.

Whereas FTUCU charges $350 for a custom map as far as enabling/disabling this and that.

I've not spoke to either of them on the phone yet and will make my decision after I do but right now, I am leaning towards SBU.

Just my 2 cents.

I've used both SBU and FT ECU flashes, and I prefer Bauce Racing ECU Flash for the 2015 R1. From my experience I list them in this order

Best - Bauce Racing, Anthony offers complete customizing for features such as engine braking, power maps, etc. As well as custom fuel & ignition map
After trying the SBU and FT ECU flash I quickly realized I hated the drastically reduced engine braking settings both flashes use. The Anthony called me by phone with my ECU loaded and helped me come up with a customized solution for both engine braking and power maps settings. I now have custom power modes with different engine braking settings for each power mode. It's dope!

Good - SBU, Offers fuel and ignition map, but don't offer custom settings such as engine braking & power maps. I prefer the personalization settings offered by Bauce which is why I rate the Bauce flash over SBU flash.

OK... - FT ECU - Offers basic unrestricted features which did not include changes to fuel / ign maps. This left a noticeable dead (and annoying) spot around 5k-6k rpms. I would not recommend this flash without a autotune or PCV addition tuning.

:shake....why do we have to have this revelation every few months....

The unrestricted image is only a base starting point....not a tune fir any particular exhaust...even the OEM exhaust, since it dissent seem that good when it left the factory, compared to what it could be.:fact

And last I check a guy with a dyno still uses a computer to come up with the tune....he doesn't just will the bits to change in the ECU:lol

A dyno is a tool to visit cells in the fuel map under load without riding the bike at speed.....you then need to log the data and determine what changes are required. Then you can see if the changes you made were good or bad....

That was just directed at the general iterwebs....

a lot of this is very new to a lot of us still. I came from a 2003 R6 to a 2015 R1. we couldn't do squat to our bike except the pcIIIusb. and that was the greatest thing in the world. all it can do is adjust the fuel table. lol it was also the only option we had. bazzaz wasn't around.

some guys posted dyno runs stock showing better power than some of the tuners making custom maps. it was bad back then lol.

I just got my ECU back from SBU, super quick turnaround and there is a noticeable difference!

It's trying to rain here so I didn't get a chance for a serious ride yet but from the little i've seen today, I'm very happy with the results and their customer service is outstanding.

I will update once I get some miles on the flash.

So after several hundred miles and some conversations with SBU about their flash...

I will be taking to the local tuner to have it dialed in correctly!

While the SBU flash would be fine for a track application, the large flat spots me bike has at the 5-6k rpm range (freeway speeds) are much too annoying to live with. So the moral of my story is have it tuned on a dyno by someone who is good at what they do (like so many people have stated on here). I just wanted to waste $200 bucks before I listened :banghead:

It's not a progressive throttle thing... the bike literally feels like it's about to fall on it's face if you hold the throttle steady in the range of 5-6k rpm as you would if your were trying to maintain the speed limit.

Normal acceleration up 2k to red line is fine, it's steady state throttle where the problem shows.

Unfortunately, this can happen every once in a while. There are so many variables in individual modifications, environment, fuel etc that occasionally there will be a dip or a flat spot. It's not typical, but can happen and without the bike, there's no way to properly correct it.

Just bear in mind, that the flash we provide is so much more than just a fuel and ignition map. There are many other critical settings there that play a large role in how the bike feels and rides. Many ECU tuners don't understand how to utilize some of these settings.

I did the SBU flash, put block off plates, a Rapidbike race module with a My tune Wideband O2 sensor and the bike is pure magic. The lead mechanic at my dealership says its the best sounding bike in the region, clean and crisp, no backfire through out the rev range.

As for riding it.....The throttle is near buttery smooth, gone is the quitchiness and it pulls till the end in every gear. Not even the Beemers at my track can pull the bike. Very happy! definitely a good path to go. Downside, they didn't have the autoblipper in stock when I sent the ECU in so I will have to do this all over when I have the funds.
