Hey guys. Always posting questions for you, so who here has a super duper lightweight fancy lithium battery? Good mod for weight savings?

Actually there is another battery that comes close, probably exceeds it as well: Aliant - Batterie litio avviamento e trazione

These are used by MotoGP teams like Gresini and in WorldSBK. I have one in my bike and so far it has performed flawlessly, they have a built-in BMS and I don't think you can find a lighter one, mine's comes in at around 1.6 pounds (750grams). And this one won't go to hell after a few months like EarthX batteries. The convenient thing about Speedcell are the quick disconnects.

While some are happy with Shorai, I'd stay the hell away from them, whether it be negligence or fraud they suck both ways. CHECK MY POST BELOW FOR SOME PICS OF THE DAMAGE.

I had a shorai and it was light as hell and easily the best bang for buck if you want weight loss but for me i cant recommend it. My climate is cold and that required the battery to be pre warmed up before there was enough power to crank, longest it took one time was 20 minutes for the battery to warm up before i could start the bike. I dont know about other brands but Shorais require their own charger or else it can fry the battery. I also think i read they cant be drained because once it is drained they dont come back like the conventional batteries.

I think you may be like me and bought an old school shorai. I've had mine in my R1 for the last five years. I have never charged it or done anything that requires any kind of maintenance. I leave it in the bike during the winter outside and just ignore it. By Spring it starts right up with some minimal charge up time. It does take up to 20 minutes to warm the thing up with colder weather but I think that's due to the old technology. I just got another bike with a Shorai and it starts right up in the coldest of mornings with no warn up required. I also have a WPS in another bike I have. It's cheaper then the Shorai and have no warm up issues. I've had the WPS for about three or four years and it's still going strong with zero maintenance as well.

Shorai here as well. Bought it for its weight savings and to help with the lower ambient temperature starting issue most of us have. Don't mind the need for a special charger, i keep it on store half the time. Didn't help the starting issue but i don't think there is a fix for it. I sometimes hold the throttle open a bit and it helps.. imo Shorai quality is great and a good bang for you buck. Good luck.

i run Shorai.. purchased in 2011 and still going strong. I didnt mind having to purchase the dedicated charger but i'm in electronics so i rarely bitch about required tech.

i keep it under storage mode through winter, somebody accidentally unplugged it a little while ago and last weekend i charged it back up to full without any issue.

its back on storage mode now, sitting pretty. Yes the weight savings are noticeable side to side :yesnod

That's the thing with Shorai, you could get a lemon and they won't do shit about it, they'll put all the blame on you even if you could have had an almost life ending experience because of it and is of no fault of your own. I might be exaggerating but when a battery is smoking like crazy and melting through its surroundings including your seat, their engineer will jump in and tell you it was YOUR fault, you probably didn't do this or that. Fraudsters.

Not to mention that their lemon numbers are on the rise, including catastrophic failures such as these:

all lithium batteries are on the dangerous side. I guarantee that shorai pictured above was never balanced charged. they have like 8 cells in there that if one gets too far off from the rest it will puff and blow up like that. I race RC cars and this is very common with lipo batteries. they've been known to burn down peoples houses. the lithium in motorcycle batts are LiFe and considered more stable but not immune to issues.

hell look at a lead acid battery warning label. they can EXPLODE. and have done so in the faces of people working on cars. the guys I know that own a transmission shop cover batteries with a blanket because they had one explode in their shop.

yeh i've never seen a properly cared for SHORAI do anything like that at all.. we've got two in the family and both are SOLID

^^ $209 (p2 600cc to 1000cc) or $289 (p3 up to 1400cc) for our needs though>> yikes!! i thought shorai was expensive when they 1st came out.

i had a look at their charger and its just a quick-charge system, they run at a much lower voltage (13.2V) than shorai which is a little odd.
Heck even lower than the oem charging system. And i see no mention of providing ability to balance internal cells, nor a storage charge
capability, which is a necessity for lithium batteries for above mentioned reasons.

Lithium ion batteries melt are dangerous, very!

'Exactly the same happened to me left it in my Yamaha R1M after stock battery kept going flat.
While charging it in bike in lcycle mode with an approved lithium ion battery charger.
When the charger wasn't charging.
I checked the battery and found this. See attachments.

Over 4 years running a Shorai with no issues. Only balanced charged once. Don't have all those fancy electronics or accessories so idk if that makes a difference or not.

From the Powerstream website:

Unlike the lead-acid battery, a number of LiFePO4 cells in a battery pack in series connection cannot balance each other during charging process. This is because the charge current stops flowing when the cell is full. This is why the LiFEPO4 packs need management boards.
There is also this info about charging: https://www.powerstream.com/LLLF.htm

Bear in mind that batteries that have a balance port do not have a "management board", or BMS. You can get away with it on a motorcycle battery because generally they are not discharged very far, so as long as the cells stay in good condition, the charging system will kind of do the job.

But if you have a dodgy cell, either from age or poor QC, and run the battery down for whatever reason, it may not end well unless you do a balance charge. Even then, you may be on borrowed time.

Most people running batteries such as Shorai without a BMS have a decent experience, I think partly because Shorai at least are careful with the cells they use. But just remember it's more good luck than good design that your battery works well.

I’ve used Alien Motion and now a Speed Cell.

Ran both for miles and no problems.

I used quick disconnects with them and keep the battery in the house in the cabinet above the refrigerator when I don’t have the bike in use for a while.

Not riding for extended periods of time has been the norm lately due to transitioning to misty track only.

still happy with Shorai.. its the most widely available & supported which is something to consider.

they've been in the game the longest in terms of having a complete product line covering the most number of bikes :dunno

the fact its coming up on roughly a decade of 'em LifePo4 batts being available period, there's other offers in the market now :yesnod

I used a shorai in my KTM 300 dirt bike and it worked pretty good for maybe a year and then something happened. I was riding in the woods and starter quit working. Checked the volts and it had over 12 volts. The problem was it didn’t have any amps . I had this happen to car batts before, but not motorcycle batts. Something inside could’ve happened , I don’t know. The batt cost a crap load so I wasn’t really happy with the outcome.

yea im running shorai in both bikes their charger is cheap. put on the pigtails so i can charge them in the bikes. i am really happy with them. when lithium ion batteries came out we used to run them in our RC cars. lighter then the nicad batteries and put out a lot more amperage so those things would fly BUT they got hot as balls and if you tried to throw them on the charger before they were cooled off they exploded. not like fizzed out some acid exploded i mean real exploded the kind with fireballs. the technology for making them safe has come along way but the material is the same and its dangerous. overcharging, overdraw, shitty connections inside, just about anything wrong could blow your balls off so keep that in mind when deciding what to choose. good luck

So after doing more research , I’ve decided to give the Shorai another shot. I’ll get the dedicated charger .
A little disappointed in the stock battery. I ride my bike all year long and it only lasts a year and a half . I mean I have over 9,ooo miles on my 17! Other bikes my batteries last over 5 years! I know lots of electronics, but what would you do if your bike broke down ?? Hazard lights would kill the bat in 5 mins. It’s not like it’s a easy bat to get to either, never mind you can’t have any tools in it with the bolt on cowl. No less this is Yammies way for weight savings I’m sure.

dedicated charger is good piece of mind.. if you ever store the bike for longer periods like a month or more,
just set to store and put battery away in a cool place. Closet is great for it

the charger will warn you when the battery has been discharged beyond 50%, need to charge to full and they're good to go.

when mine came delivered, it was so lightweight I thought they failed to put the guts in the battery. I thought they sent me the case only

buy the correct charger for lithium ION
