Hi all,

I am starting my day the worst possible way. My R1 was parked in the middle of my apt complex without the lock. Someone hammered it out. No other visible damage other than that. Should I file a police report? Or would that be useless? Can I talk to insurance company if I have anti-theft coverage? Where can I get repaid for something like this? Am I just going to have to suck it up since I don't know who did this? I'm just really pissed off and tired of this place called world. What the hell is wrong with the ppl? Anyway, if you know what kind of procedure might be helpful to follow, let me know. Thanks.

If you can't afford to keep the bike indoors, you can't afford the bike. A bike in an apartment complex will get stolen, no matter how many chains or locks are on it. Do a search on Stolen R1 and you will find that about 95% of the time it's from an apartment. It's so prevalent that my insurance agent won't write a bike unless it's garaged.

This is extremely true. Some of us here are Military, buying a house where we will be on orders for only 3 years is not a feasible or economically sound thing to do so we are forced to live in Apartments. In San Diego where I am, the city is rated #3 on the national average for motorcycle thefts and keeping a motorcycle secure is kinda tough especially when you live less than 4 miles from the Border- My friends Gsxr-750 was taken less than 24 hours after he got it home, the Investigator who did the theft report said he would never see the bike again as it was probably already stripped and everything that had a VIN was laying in a ditch somewhere in Mexico by now. One thing someone who lives in such a situation can do is get an alternate form of transportation and keep their Motorcycle(s) secured indoors somewhere else which is what I do- the Situation sucks but at least I know both my bikes are secure and can be retrieved anytime I want.

file a insurance claim for a broken ignition? why would you do that?

the ignition is a couple hundred bucks to replace everything including the top clamp. youe insurance deductable will be as much and then you have a claim under you insurance file wich could raise your rates and less likely to get insurance by another company. just my opinion...

I have no comforting words for you......For some reason you were delusional to think a high end motorcycle would be safe outside in an apt complex unlocked:shake :shake :shake

well it's 1999 model. there were at least five other motorcycles (looking new) w/o locks right around the corner. however I am thinking of getting a garage now. i just didn't think my neighborhood was like this. it is supposed to be one of the safest part in town. anyway, motorcycle insurance won't cover this since i don't have insurance coverage for vandalism. i guess it would be illegal to add theft coverage now and wait for those bastards to come back and take it (or is it not?). now im going to call my renters insurance and see if they would cover it. :(

if someone has tried to steal it already thats a good reason to call your insurance to get full coverage now. also have them add for any aftermarket stuff you have on it like slip ons. if it goes missing in a week or two it may LOOk shady...but they can investigate all they want..you did nothing illegal...all you gotta say is you thought was just punk kids messing with it...thats why you went for full coverage..you never expected it to go missing.

^^^ this

When I moved to FL, I moved into a very nice upscale apartment complex. The rental lady ( a hottie to mention) suggested I get an enclosed garage for my toys. I thought she was just tryin' to sell me some shit but I rented the garage anyway,,, extra 100 bucks a month. Man, was that a good call. Stuff got stolen from the parking lot almost every night and the complex was gated!
