When are we going to be able to take back the ECU flashing power?

I just got my 07 R1 and Ive been doing alot of reading about it. Figured I would join here since im a member at hayabusa.org because I own my busa.

I guess my biggest complaint about this bike is the limitation in the throttle until i get past 6k or so rpms. Rather annoying since my busa doesnt have that and it just makes the R1 seem....weak.

Anyway, did alot of reading and an ECU flash takes care of this.

Problem is, an ECU flash runs over $500. What a freakin rip off.

Pay over $500 to have someone plug in a $20 cable from the ECU to a computer then use a piece of software to read/write to the ECU. Really? REALLY?
I can flash my xbox 360 Nand and DVD drive all day for FREE

What a friggin racket.

So when are we gonna take the power back and start flashing these ECUs ourselves and eliminate these exploiters?

So annoying. Id hate to say it but until we are able to flash the ECUs ourselves and not have to pay a ridiculous amount of money, the busa is just far superior...

Wow...I need a busa too :bow

By the way, I rode with a few busas last weekend. Before we even got to the first gas stop, one turned around and went home and the second one went off in the weeds and dropped it (then he went home too). Two R1's and a Ducati continued on for a great ride...and a darn fine mexican lunch :jump

i have no issues launching my R1 from the red lights. you gotta learn to ride better. Next time your at a red light hold the clutch get revs up to about 5K then once the light turns green release clutch and twist the throttle all the way back. haha
The ECU is a great bang for the buck. And I found a place that does it for $400. Gonna go it next tax season. As for "when are we gonna start doing it outselves" Have you got a computer that can read an OBD2 port on a car? Can you afford one? Can you find anywhere to get a ECU to USB cable anywhere? Nope i doubt you can on any of those. These companies spend tons and tons of money in order to "crack" the Manufactuers codeson the ECU. And now that the Yamaha's and who knows what other bikes have been cracked its going to take some more R&D before we start seeing reflashers like they have a cars. (SCT Tuners, Diablosports, Livewire).
The reason Yamaha had to put these restrictions on the bike are mostly for emmisions. Its that thing that the government enforces. So they can't very well say "no". Cause if they did guess what...we would have no motorcycles to buy. And another reason the limit the available power is the "speed treaty" that bikes cannot go over 187mph. (granted a lot of them still do..its just the speedometer doesnt read higher then that)
and 1 last reason they limit the power...is so the wanna be racer dipshits that go out and buy a bike and think they can just jump on it and twist all the way back dont kill themselves...well not immediately anyways

I'm sorry to tell you that but there is NO RESTRICTION in the 07 throttle for lower rpm.the way the bike behave in the lower range is cause of the stroke/bore ratio ... if you want something that push right before the release of the clutch get a 09...the 07 is only peak power related.mine it's an euro one and got also a YEC ecu, it starts to pull just after 5000 rpm ... under 5000 is completely dead...it's just the way a pumped inline pulls today...

Nice bikes you have there! For a cheap quick improvement you might try some gearing changes. Drop a tooth or two up front.

Most of it is just the nature of the beast...you have to wind them up a bit to get to the sweet spots. Low-end grunt for quick take-offs would rob the power on the other end.

For me, no way I could ride a busa as quick and smooth (in the twisties) as I can my R1, but if I was into quick starts and straight line speed (drag racing?), I would choose the busa too.

Please let me apologize on your behalf for every person you meet in the future - I'm sure that they will quickly identify that such a person with a closed mind as your seems to be is unable to see the differences between how two very different bikes are built.

Stressing one bike is better than the other is just idiotic, especially when comparing and apples/oranges situation such as the 1300cc sport cruiser to the 998cc hypersport R1/GSXR/1000RR/S1000RR/ZX10R. Besides that role is already taken by that single path thinker tripplex.

Suzuki ECU's are set up to be easily re-flashed just like Triumph, Duc and many other Euro bikes. They provide their dealers with the tools to do it. Yamaha ECU's aren't.
Never-More has the right idea or busa boy can spend the funds to crack the ECU and build the interface to modify it out of his pocket and then make it available to the rest of us for free. Just cause he's such a nice guy. I mean why would he expect someone else that spent time and money to do it to charge anyone?

Its the opposite for me!! I have to spot one, chase the dude aways, then when Im passing there ass' they back off the throttle!? One dude I messed with was like, I never been over hundred yet! We must have been 160 or so. I just shrugged and left. I dont really now how fast Busa' are, but I have'nt riden one either, but I can tell you I could care less.
Get the ECU replaced on the R1, get the PC, pipes and gears! You'll like this better than a Busa and you can tune it!

why are we launching at 8k at a stoplight anyway? i just put around at 4-5 in traffic?

did someone mention your busa has a tad bit more power over the powerband compared to the higher powerband of a r1? so in witch to get the same effect you would have to use the bike in the appropriate band area........something like that haha

i love r1's rode a busa, to....mammoth feeling i like the way the r1 delivers power yah peaky at most but hey i dont need 190 hp at 5k rpms ethier

:hellobye Well welcome to the R-1 Forum..... You've got a great lookin' couple of bikes there. My 2cents would be gearing and a Power Commander with a custom tune as a basic starting point, but then again I don't know much. There's a vast amount of info here, just use the search link up top.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions. I have a PC3 on it right now.

Ive ton a ton of research about the limitations right now so I have a pretty good set of information regarding it.

As far as the hilarious comments about turning on a busa, get on one. It truly is not that difficult to get down and turn. Its a common misconception. A rider just has to know how to get the bike to do that.

So is this the R1 culture then? Defend the weak low end of the bike because it "makes up for it in top end"?
Excuse me if I feel a performance machine shouldnt feel like its choking itself in low RPMs. For some reason I feel like a performance machine should work well all around on all aspect of how it runs....
My mistake. Guess performance machine means settle for a weak low end.

Do some research on the reflash first and foremost. The '07-08s are far from being dead in low RPM. Compared to other liter bikes, possibly, but they are still quite a step up from a 600 in overall torque. If you want to gain some bottom end then do the -1+2 gearing swap, you won't be able to keep the front end on the tarmac. One would be hard-pressed to find a mod that is so cheap but yields so much for the R1, especially the '07-08s. But like others have said, just give it a little more punch and it will launch like a beast if you want it to or you can keep it manageable. People need to remember though, these bikes weren't designed to be in "stop-light traffic", these are factory race bikes with lights, signals, and a horn.

Troll, look at the squid-ass license plate bracket on the "Big-bad-ass-Hayashitta". Guy probably rides around on his "Busa" with his Icon jacket and wearing a NY baseball cap sideways thinking he is some kinda of bad-ass hood rat. Doubt he has any clue on how to really ride a sportbike.

My question.. If you bought the R1 new it $10,000- $13,000 range. used $6,000 ish. whats $500 for a mod that gives you the performance you want?

Would you spend $12,000 on an exhaust system for a little gain? so why not $500 to get the computer to do what you think it should?

Did you ask you mechanic if he can enable PRM? that costs WAY less and will do way more than the $500 flash will.

And I don't care if you think the Busa is faster, they are just UGLYm I'd rather be seen on a Harley and I Give head before I'd ride a Harley.. :crash

Tigertim20 - this is no place for facts, reason or anything other than shitting on the R1. The busa is king. Live long the king!

I doubt having your throtle open wider in the first 6k rev range would make more power, but there might be some limits created... secondly, The Busa should have more low range torque, but not feel faster...

But let's not compare the 2 bikes... they are miles apart!

...getting back to your point, I doubt there is a easier/more reliable way of doing it than having a YEC ecu or paying $500 to flash, but keep on looking and if you find any worth while updates let us know... maby Try asking in this thread http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182384&page=838
