EDR performance is reporting a lot of crank failures on the r1.
I've been asking around, local racers and performance shops. They haven't reported anything out of the ordinary and some of these guys aren't gentle out on the track. Seems like EDR may be doing a bit of fear-mongering.

They posted another guy that lost a motor outside of their circle. Same issue.

Obviously any bike can have a failure. This particular crank issue concerns me because it can shred the engine if it happens.

I’m not too terribly aggressive with redlining the bike on the track so perhaps I would not have an issue.

It’s just a bit troubling.

I love this bike so it’s something I don’t really want to do. Turned my fastest times on this bike. It just works on the track well.

01 had trani issues and 06 had a bad design stator that would crumble magnets and drop them into the oil pan. No bike is perfect

Crank failures. Hmmmm.

Crazy.

I think it’s amongst one of the best track bikes too.
As far as riding it I will not argue that. Most excellent bike for track. I’m just nervous about the crank.

I heard one racer guy literally bought multiple cranks and switched them out periodically. I guess racing stock class you can’t use aftermarket crank.

I love the bike in so many ways. But I’m considering unloading it.

I have z900 for street riding. I can always buy an r6 track bike.

I sure wish Yamaha would address this but I feel it’s mostly a track thing.

Is not the crank/engine covered under Yamaha warranty? Why are you all worried?

I don't see the argument over tracked bikes vs non-tracked ones. One can ride in low gears on the street and hit redline all the time.

My understanding is it tends to happen at tracks with long straights where the bike is at full throttle and high revs for a period of time. The theory is that this results in harmonic vibrations, partly due to the crossplane crank, which can lead to the crank breaking.

I don't know if this is correct, just read it somewhere.

Interesting.

My bike is out of warranty now. I didn’t get extended. I am going to call Yamaha and pick their brain about the issue, track and if I can go ahead and get an extended warranty if tracking is covered.

Could you keep us posted? Will be good to know what they say.

There's a difference between "a lot of failures" and "a lot of premature failures". As was mentioned, if you're taking a bike to a track a lot, you better be expecting some rebuilds along the way...

Any race series that doesn't have a sealed engine allocation involves a complete tear down and rebuild after every race weekend (BSB, I think allows this?)

I've never owned a crossplane but I've been on here for quite awhile and I don't recall seeing any threads about massive failures with the newest gen bikes (other than the gearbox recall)

I wouldn’t say a lot of failures in the grand scheme of things I guess. I probably don’t ride hard enough to have an issue.

I don’t track much. Too expensive to do all the time. Tires!! I go once every couple of months.

I just posted this in another thread, yes the cranks and rods "may" fail with stock or worked motors....if you have YES warranty and a good relationship with your dealer, it didnt happen at the track...

Time to break in my 2017 crate motor...

We have seen some failures, but I'm sorry to say that almost of the built motors we've seen fail came from the same shop, which is really unfortunate for their customers. The only other failure we've seen firsthand was on a very old race engine that was effectively at the end of it's service life.

This 2015 issue is nowhere near as widespread as some would have us think, but the 2017 motor is definitely beefier.
